Blind Charlies Cafe

To understand who Blind Charlie is, we have to go back a bit in Pound Ridge history-way back. In the 1800’s we were mostly farmers but with a surprising number of manufacturers in our midst. Along with growing corn we made shoes and baskets. In fact, baskets became one of our outstanding talents, so much so that at one time Scotts Corner was nicknamed “Basket Town”! We made baskets for everything but mostly for the oyster and clam trade that was big at the time. Did we make many? Amazingly, one year a couple of families turned out over twenty thousand baskets in varying sizes and designs.

One of the busiest and most talented families was the Scofield group. They were known for the quality and designs of their product. Well, as the World Turns they, besides a basket or two, begat children. Along came Charlie, he was the first of seven, Charlie Scofield. Did he live a happy life? Probably, at least until he was seven. He came down with scarlet fever, and lacking the treatment and cures that we have now, suffered blindness as a result. In the parlance of the day he was known, of course, as “Blind Charlie”.

Is this the end of our story? No, Charlie grew up to become a basket weaver. He was so proficient that he earned the title of “Master Artisan” and became a noted judge of basketry and all-around expert in the craft. He was busy selling his goods too, and though he couldn’t see he would load up his wagon and, with a small boy to guide him, would travel all over New England, up to New Haven, across to Poughkeepsie and along the Hudson to sell his wares, returning finally to Pound Ridge. Charlie, despite his handicap, was reported to be always cheery and a busy and ambitious man. We think Charlie’s story is indeed inspiring and seemed worthy enough for us to recognize a true “Pound Ridger” and give a bit of meaning to our eating and, we hope, gathering place.
